Glacier National Park
Wow - what a place! I have several thoughts about Glacier National Park.
It is amazing and beautiful - a lot of walking to discover the truly remarkable areas but worth the walk. Sometimes the trails throw in some extra fun like stream crossings on rocks or log crossing over a river...
Each area has such a different feel and even on a walk the landscape can change several times.
We feel so lucky to have seen several bears, mountain goats, deer and a moose! We heard the moose before we saw him through the trees - about 50 yards away. No photo of him as there were too many trees. The goats were on the mountain side and didn't show up in the photos but you can see the blur down below how I tried. :) Also - a barred owl flew right towards us (within 3 feet) as we walked in the woods. We were too startled to take a picture but I took one from the internet to remember it.
We were definitely glad we had several days here to see things. We were bummed Many Glacier area was closed but other than that we have been very blessed with good weather and finding parking spots along the hikes we want to do in each of the other areas of Glacier.
Speaking of parking spots - they can be a real challenge even this time of year. I can't imagine in the summer...
The landscape has changed almost daily as it was brown when we arrived and with the rain a couple of days and nights it has turned into fabulous autumn colors and snow has appeared on many of the mountain peaks.
My photos do not begin to due the scenery justice.
People are so friendly and willingly shared what they had seen or where they were from. But some are Stupid with a capital S! We saw bikers on Going to the Sun Road (sorry NOT the place for a bike), people walking without looking where they were going (into traffic - almost off cliffs), passing vehicles in the fog on curvy roads and almost saw a speeder hit a bear.
I managed NOT to fall despite sometimes very rocky trails and trying to look at everything as we walked... I consider that a big win. I love my new hiking sticks.
Bill did amazing on the Going to the Sun Road - several times! With deep dropoffs going up and cliffs jutting out going down - it was a bit nail biting. No scratches on the truck and we still have both rearview mirrors. I did some mountain road driving but not on that one!
Our last day was the perfect day. We were on the trail right as the sun rose (we got a packing spot no problem!) We walked from the Trail of the Cedars up to Avalache Lake. We had a little breakfast there listening to the sounds of the waterfalls in the distance echo down on to the lake. After the trek down we finished the rest of Trail of the Cedars and gave away our parking spot to a very happy couple. We shared a wonderful caprese sandwich (and one more piece of Huckleberry pie) in town before hitting the hot tub to soak away stiff legs.
We are excited to come back in 2 years and spend more time on the East side - to include Many Glacier.
Tomorrow we leave Glacier and begin our journey to Yellowstone!
