The Golden Isles of Georgia Barrier Islands
We had a perfect day to explore 2 out of the 4 barrier islands - St Simon and Jekyll Island. Of the two remaining - on is basically a fancy resort with a golf course and the other is only accessible by boat. It was our second time to explore Jekyll. The sun was bright and the temp was 70+. I loved seeing the flowers out in Dec! We had fun out on the pier watching the dolphins swim.
St Simon has Spirit Trees. The story is that the images were inspired by the sailors who lost their lives at sea that were once made from the island's oak trees. Their sad expressions gazed out of the tree with the handing moss adding to the sadness. We definitely found that the more recent ones have apparently strayed away from the sailor idea... notice the third face and the mermaid. We had fun looking for them. While we didn't search for all 20 of them - we did enjoy the ones we found.
We walked out on the pier and watched the dolphins and after exploring a bit, we returned to the pier to have lunch and watch the ships - a few shrimp boats came in while we sat there.
Jekyll Island is so interesting with the history of the rich folks trying it keep it exclusive and the resulting issues. We didn't take the trolley tour this time but we did drive around the area with the 'cottages/mansions' and recalled many of the stories we heard when we were here in 2021. We went back to Driftwood Beach - still incredible to view the trees. We also went out to the point at St Andrews Beach.
