Twin Falls
When we planned the stop in Twin Falls we were excited to read about Shoshone Falls. It is said that these falls are often referred to as the Niagara of the West. At 212 feet tall and 900 foot wide, Shoshone Falls is one of the largest natural waterfalls in the United States surpassing the height of the famous Niagara Falls. What they didn't say was that the falls are managed as needed by the Milner Dam 20 miles upstream. In a year this dry - they were completely redirected for irrigation purposes. So what we hoped to see and what we did see were very, very different!!! A bummer for sure.
We had heard that it is pretty crazy how after miles and miles of flat land - you reach the Snake River Canyon. This area did not disappoint at all! The views were incredible and the water was a fabulous color of green teal. The views to one side were the gorgeous canyon and the river. The other side had the green golf course setting on what seems to be rock. We did get to see 3 base jumpers go off the Perrine Bridge. That was very freaky - almost upsetting.
We also went to see Balanced Rock. Again - driving along the cattle farms and fields and suddenly we left the fields behind and drove into a deep canyon. It has steep walls then suddenly appears Balanced Rock just off by itself. It is over 48 feet high, 40 feet wide and weighing 40 tons, balancing precariously on a pedestal only 3 feet by 17 1/2 inches. Just crazy to think it is the virtually the same rock that explorers saw 1000s of years ago. We drove from there to the little park nearby and had another wonderful surprise. It was green and lush - just wonderful. We enjoyed watching the trout and listening to the pigeons in the walls of the canyon.
Our next stop is Salt Lake City, Utah!
Spring Falls.... what we thought we would see
Our view - sooo dry!
The Snake River Canyon
The Perrine Bridge was gorgeous
A view of the golf course from the bridge
Base Jumpers - getting ready to go
Can you even see them at the top just to the left of the truck?
The parachute goes over first - then the jumper
Free floating
Almost down - only takes 15-20 seconds
Just missed the water - made it to the bull's eye on the ground
Bulls eye on the ground - then they have to climb all the way back up with their gear
Balanced Rock
Balanced Rock Park
Canyon walls all around the park
Trout in the stream
More pictures of the park because I loved it there
Another - the call of so many pigeons echoed in the canyon
Bill checking things out
Supposedly famous candy bar - mostly cream, chocolate and coconut - just the shape I guess is potato?
