Horseshoe Bend

It was a long trip from Cannonville, UT to Horseshoe Bend but it is one of those places you just need to see!   We enjoyed the scenery as we drove - it kept changing from flat to mountains to cliffs - very interesting!   The walk down to the Bend is about .5 miles and as you walk down you see absolutely no sign that the land is going to suddenly stop and drop into a canyon with the water below.  It was amazing to see it in person.  Way down below were kayaks and a tent or two set up by the rivers edge.

We also enjoyed stopping to see the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument.  We wondered what made these a National Monument - they are interesting how they suddenly come up straight from the valley floor - but a monument?   Then we read that condors live there so it is a way to protect them.  We didn't saw any there but there was one at the Navajo Bridge.   Very cool!!   We didn't see it fly but a man had a telescope and we were able to see it much closer.   It appeared to be nesting on a the edge of a rock.  Man are they ugly!
