Monticello
Indiana gave us perfect 70 degree weather for the week we were there. We went to the Indiana Sand Dunes National Park and admired Lake Michigan once again. Those colors... just love it everytime. We looked across the water and saw Chicago 30 miles away! A man nearby said that doesn't happen very often so it was a treat.
Further down the shoreline we visited the 5 Century of Progress homes built for the 1933 Worlds Fair in Chicago. Each was designed with a futuristic theme in mind. Why they are there now - we never figured that out. It was interesting how they brought them to Indiana by barge. I bet that was an usual site! But it was fun to see them and read about each. Pretty sure I could get used to that pink one and the location!!
We also visited Monon to see the Monon Connection - Train Museum. What an incredible display of train memorable - inside and outside. I had no idea the different laterns - shapes and colors - each mean something. Plus they have the actual train cars from Mrs Flagler when she traveled separate from her husband - talk about luxury! I asked how they kept all the china and crystal from breaking and the guide answered - they didn't. They replaced it constantly.
There were two 'garden size' trains running over head and then - a full train set up! That was very cool to see. It is an amazing feat of love. The detail was incredible from the mountains, to the people, farm, machinary, etc. The photos don't even begin to do it justice.
We finished off the day with a couple of walks - one was through Celery Bog - no celery or bog there any more. Just a pond... ah well. The 5 minute video of the history of the area including celery farming years ago was interesting. The second was a sculpture garden in Lafayette.
Now it is on to see my dauther in Champaign Illinois!
