Fredericksburg

We had a little switch it up going over this Thanksgiving holiday.   I (Suzy) flew to Illinois to be with my daughters and Julia came to Texas to experience nomad living.   She and Bill started in Spicewood but made the move with the trailer to Fredericksburg.  I had no idea the small town of Fredericksburg has over 100 wineries and some breweries tossed in too.  Apparently grapes grow well here.

Julia flew home and I flew to Austin.  Bill and I began to explore the area in our remaining days here.  One place we wanted to go for sure was Luchenbach, TX - the 'city' from the famous song - Luchenbach, Texas.   Fascinating little spot when you consider the history but not much to do or see so I can see how some are disappointed when they arrive.   We enjoyed a little live country music and explored around the property a bit. The story of the population of 3 was very interesting.  Talk about making something big out of nothing at all!  Sadly the main character of the town, Hondo, never heard the famous song- he died the year before.

Back in Fredericksburg, the park has a nightly lighting of the tree - Julia and I were both able to see that on separate nights while Bill got to see it twice.   :)   Very nice free display.

We finished our stay with a self guided tour of LBJ's ranch.  Very interesting to explore the homestead of the 36th president.   He was really one of the first individuals to 'work from home'!   I loved that they point out the oak tree he often sat under with his cabinet members!  I think it is amazing that he gave it to the state as a park - after Lady Bird died 23 years later.   He also included the farm from his neighbors as a working farm to show life in the early 1900s.  Loved that this was all free as well.   His grandson still lives on a connected acreage.
