Carlsbad
We spent a week at Carlsbad, NM. Still the drough continues but I got the impression that it is often this color of brown and dry most months out of the year. I suppose spring brings flowers on the cactus and green in the fields... but it is very brown now.
We spent some time exploring the city of Carlsbad and the Living Desert - very cool for a small exhibit. We spend most of the next day in the Carlsbad Canyons. The mile and 1/2 down the steep cave walls was very fun - so many different things to view as we descended. But I have to say - I was very glad there is an elevator to go back up!
New Mexico boasts it is the "Chile Capitol of the World" so we had to try some in some form. We had a green chile chicken pizza at the Guadalupe Mountain Brewery. It was good - just a bite now and then that reminded me that there was a potential for some burn! Bill liked the IPAs.
We also spent a day at Roswell which was fun ... and maybe enlightening... we weren't convinced but something sure seemed to have happened there.
We saw signs for Blake's LotaBurger and thought it was just trying to be like WhataBurger. But no - I guess LotaBurger is a big thing - especially for the Chile Burger... so we had to split one of those too. Good spices - and the burger ... well despite being big was just a burger.
Fun little place to explore
The natural opening into the canyons
Starting down the steep switch backs
Heading into the cave for our 3 mile hike in darkness
Last bit of sunlight for several hours
stalagmite meet stalactites
Something new round every corner
The trail goes down 75 stories!
Not much color but the shape variations were cool
Ribbon stalactites
There were crystal clear pools of water near the bottom
I couldn't even capture how massive this area was
Little caves everywhere
And down further
us in a cave
From tiny ones to massive - the rock formations were beautiful
Green Chile Pizza
Good place to relax a bit
Too close to Roswell to see odd things in the sky and not wonder....
Love the postivity on the bag!
