West Point Academy and Newburgh
Sometimes we have little stays inbetween our planned big stays. This was one of them. We were staying in Plattekill, NY. What to do in Plattekill? I saw that West Point Academy was not far so we decided to drive there. While we were there, I was remembering my late cousin, Tim O'Neil, who graduated from West Point in 1979. Bridget, my cousin - his sister and I were communicating as we were there about how the family came to watch his commencement ceremony. That must have been amazing. Sadly Tim died in 2012.
It was very cool to watch the video about their training and drive around the campus. Many of the buildings are brick and look so historic. The grounds were absolutely lush and beautiful.
Afterwards we had a picnic lunch at Bear Mountain and walked around Hessian Lake. The fall colors are still gorgeous here. It has been such a nice long fall for us as we chase the colors from the extreme north as they travel down south. We have loved that so much.
Finally we stopped in at George Washington's Headquarters! He lived here during the final months of the war and while rejecting the idea of an American monarchy. How incredible to stand on the grounds where so much history took place that changed our nation dramatically.
The last picture are iconic New York brownstones just because!
