Great Plains State Park
Okalahoma was a quick 2 night stop but we made the most of it. We enjoyed seeing the huge fields of cotton and the harvested bales waiting on the side of the road.
The Holy City of the Witchitas was very unexpected! It is free - right in the middle of the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. It was built to resemble Israel during Bibical Times. It was started when a minister brought his students to the mountain to better explain the story of Christ's Passion. It 1926 they began building permanent structures. The city now holds the longest running annual Passion Play at Easter on the grounds at sunrise. All the buildings are made of locally mined granite. Fascinating place! The Wildlife refuge center was also fun to see free range long horn steer mixed in with the herd of bison.
We decided on a whim to visit the city of Medicine Lake as I saw a photo of some cool bridges. The whole town is just interesting! While off season so most of the shops were closed - we enjoyed just exploring the area and having some donuts by the beautiful water. It is a very pretty area!
Fields of cotton lined the road.
The campground lake was so pretty!
The nights were chilly but the days were wonderful - no one here to spoil the view either!
Sharing the lake with a blue heron
We checked out the Holy City of the Wichitas
Beautiful church the paintings throughout
Three crosses on the hillside
The Tomb
Scene of the Judgement
The hills were still pretty with fall colors
The white bridges are so striking against the blue water and red rock.
You can stay in these 'birdhouses' along the water!
Waterfall on Bath Lake
Not sure we deserved these but yum...
Still a touch of summer - even in November
I did not know Oklahoma had cactus.
Our first LIVE armadello! We have seen a lot by the road - mostly dead. This guy wasn't too worried about us as we walked by.
They are the oddest creatures! So cool!
